What the Opportunity Card is

The Opportunity Card, also called Chancenkarte, is designed for people who want to enter Germany to look for suitable employment. It is a job-search pathway, not a job offer and not a promise of permanent residence.

Applicants should confirm whether they need a visa before entering Germany, where to apply from their country of residence, and what documents the German mission requires.

Eligibility at a high level

The official route involves qualification, language, work experience, age, connection to Germany, and financial-support considerations. Some applicants may qualify through recognition of a foreign professional qualification or academic degree, while others may need to use a points-based route.

Do not rely on a social media scorecard or agent promise. Check the official Make it in Germany guidance and the German mission responsible for your application location.

  • Review whether your qualification is recognized or comparable.
  • Check language expectations and whether English or German evidence is needed for your situation.
  • Prepare evidence of work experience, education, funds, passport, and civil documents.
  • Plan how you will search for jobs after arrival, including CV format and interview readiness.

Why CV and career fit matter

The Opportunity Card can help with access to job search, but employers still decide whether your profile fits a role. A weak CV, unclear qualification history, or poor interview preparation can make the route less useful even if the visa step is possible.

Before spending money, compare your occupation, language level, salary expectations, and German employer demand. For regulated professions, recognition and licensing can be as important as the visa itself.

Sri Lanka-specific preparation

Sri Lankan applicants should keep a clean document file, verify any agency or consultant, and avoid anyone promising a guaranteed German job or guaranteed visa. If overseas employment is involved, review SLBFE guidance as part of your preparation.
